Penal substitutionary atonement is a theory which attempts to explain the meaning and purpose of Christ’s death, how Jesus’ death saves and what it means for the world. It’s a theory which I have argued against openly and often, I’ve written extensively against it in my book We Belong: Trinitarian Good News .

It is the very heart of the gospel. Consequently, to deny PSA is to deny the gospel itself. I certainly am not the only one in agreement with my pastor’s conclusion. PSA has been widely held and regularly preached by faithful pastors throughout church history. This idea—summarily called the doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement—has fallen from grace in many circles. It’s been under assault not just by agnostics but by Christians themselves, some of Penal Substitutionary Atonement.
